First Dog - Portuguese Water Dog or Doodle

Last week, President-Elect Barack Obama received a question from his daughters during his interview with George Stephanopoulos, on ABC News. They wanted to know what kind of dog they are getting and when. President-Elect Obama told us he wanted to adopt either a Portuguese water dog or a Labradoodle from a shelter.

Labradoodles and other doodle dogs were created by mixing poodles with other breeds. Some Labradoodles inherit the curly hypoallergenic coat from their poodle side, other Labradoodles have a coat that is more like a Labrador Retriever.

Portuguese Water Dogs are a medium size dog. They are a fun breed with their own water sports and trials. The people from the Portuguese Water Dog Clubs are some of the friendliest people I have met at dog shows. This breed is hypoallergenic, friendly, and loves water. To learn more about the Portuguese Water Dog go to www.pwdca.org/.

The dog in the picture is a Labradoodle. He is owned by a junior dog whisperer who lives near Yosemite. This one has the curly hypoallergenic coat. His coat does not shed and needs to be trimmed by a groomer. This dog has a lot of energy. He will retrieve for hours.
